Best Universities to Study Sustainability in South Africa

South Africa has several universities offering postgraduate programmes connected to sustainability, sustainable development, climate change, environmental management and sustainability transitions. For professionals already working in the field, these programmes can provide a way to deepen technical knowledge, strengthen research skills or move into sustainability-focused roles.

This is not an exhaustive list or a ranking of South African universities. It is a starting point for anyone researching postgraduate sustainability programmes and comparing options based on academic background, career interests, programme structure and admission requirements. Programme names, requirements and application dates can change, so applicants should always confirm the latest information with the university.

1. University of Cape Town (UCT)

University of Cape Town offers several postgraduate programmes connected to sustainability, climate change and environmental development.

One of the most directly relevant options is the MPhil in Environment, Society and Sustainability. The 18-month full-time programme is designed for students from diverse backgrounds, with applicants from both natural and social sciences encouraged to apply. The programme covers environmental and developmental challenges, sustainable development theory, environmental assessment and management, urban environmental management, social-ecological systems and sustainable communities. UCT states that applicants should normally hold an Honours degree or an equivalent four-year qualification.

UCT also offers a Master's in Climate Change and Sustainable Development, convened by the African Climate and Development Initiative. It is a one-year, full-time taught Master's programme combining climate science, economics, policy, adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development from an African and developing-world perspective. The programme includes a research dissertation and can prepare graduates for work across government, business, consulting, NGOs and international development organisations. Applicants normally need an Honours degree or equivalent four-year qualification.

UCT's African Climate and Development Initiative also identifies other postgraduate pathways connected to climate and sustainable development, including research Master's and PhD opportunities.

Useful for: Climate change, sustainable development, environmental management, climate policy and interdisciplinary sustainability research.

2. Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University has a particularly strong postgraduate focus through its Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST).

The CST offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Development, an MPhil in Sustainable Development and a PhD in Sustainable Development. The Postgraduate Diploma is an honours-level qualification delivered in a hybrid format and is designed for working professionals, activists, practitioners and recent graduates seeking stronger grounding in sustainability thinking, research and practice. The programme can be completed over one or two years.

The PGDip also serves as an entry point into the CST's wider postgraduate research environment. Graduates can apply to continue into the MPhil and subsequently the PhD, subject to the relevant admission requirements.

The MPhil in Sustainable Development is a two-year, 180-credit interdisciplinary programme combining coursework with a research thesis. It covers sustainability transitions, research design and methods, and research reflection and outreach. The programme accepts applicants with an appropriate Honours-level qualification, including qualifications from disciplines outside sustainability.

For applicants considering the programme for the 2027 academic year, the CST currently lists 30 August 2026 as the MPhil application deadline and 30 September 2026 for the PGDip. Applicants should check the university's application system for the latest dates before applying.

Useful for: Sustainability transitions, sustainable development, sustainability research, governance and interdisciplinary sustainability practice.

3. University of Johannesburg (UJ)

University of Johannesburg offers a Master of Sustainability Management through its Department of Business Management in the College of Business and Economics.

The programme is a part-time, two-year Master's at NQF Level 9. UJ describes its purpose as developing the ability to manage sustainability within organisations and lead organisational and cultural change associated with integrating sustainability into business and institutional operations.

The admission requirements are relatively specific. Applicants need a four-year qualification equivalent to an Honours-level NQF Level 8 qualification, a minimum average of 65%, and at least five years of professional experience, including at least three years of sustainability experience. The university may also use interviews, assessments or a research proposal as part of its selection process.

For 2026, UJ lists applications for the Master's in Sustainability Management as opening on 1 April and closing on 30 September 2026.

UJ also has postgraduate study in Environmental Management, including Master's-level environmental management programmes documented through its Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies academic area.

Useful for: Sustainability management, organisational sustainability, environmental management and sustainability leadership.

4. University of Pretoria (UP)

University of Pretoria has postgraduate environmental programmes through its Centre for Environmental Studies, a graduate school focused on multidisciplinary environmental training and research.

One current programme listed in the 2026 University of Pretoria Yearbook is the MSc specialising in Ecology. The programme is coordinated by the Department of Zoology and Entomology and focuses on areas including ecosystem structure and function, ecosystem services, conservation planning, invasive species, restoration, biodiversity and environmental management.

The programme's stated purpose includes preparing environmental graduates for areas such as conservation planning, environmental management and air quality management. The Centre for Environmental Studies itself focuses on developing environmental professionals who can contribute to environmental legislation and industry-driven environmental management systems.

UP therefore represents a different sustainability pathway from programmes that focus primarily on sustainability management or sustainable development policy. Its environmental programmes connect sustainability with ecology, conservation, environmental management and natural-resource systems.

Useful for: Ecology, conservation, environmental management, biodiversity and environmental research.

Choosing a sustainability programme in South Africa

There is no single academic route into sustainability. The programmes above cover different parts of the field.

Someone interested in climate change and sustainable development may want to examine UCT's Master's in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Those interested in sustainability transitions and interdisciplinary sustainable development research can explore Stellenbosch University's CST programmes. Professionals already working in organisations and looking specifically at sustainability management can examine UJ's Master's in Sustainability Management, while candidates interested in ecology, conservation and environmental management can consider relevant programmes at the University of Pretoria.

Your previous degree also matters. Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field, so programmes can accept applicants from environmental science, geography, natural sciences, social sciences, business, economics, development studies and other related disciplines. However, the specific admission requirements vary considerably between universities.

A note on doing your own research

Programme availability, admission requirements, fees, application deadlines and delivery formats can change between academic years. The safest approach is to start with the university's official programme page and confirm the requirements for the specific year you intend to study.

For international applicants, it is also important to check qualification equivalency, English-language requirements, visa requirements, tuition fees and whether the programme is available to international students.

The programmes listed here should therefore be treated as a research starting point rather than a definitive ranking of South African sustainability degrees.
