About ESS
ESS is seeking an E&S Specialist to join its Environmental & Social team in Gabon. The successful candidate will support environmental and social assignments, particularly within the mining sector, combining technical assessment, fieldwork, stakeholder engagement and report writing.
The Opportunity
This role is designed for an environmental and social professional with practical experience in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and a strong environmental background.
The E&S Specialist will work alongside senior E&S professionals, technical specialists and multidisciplinary project teams, contributing to assignments from field-based data collection through technical analysis, impact assessment and reporting.
The position is based in Libreville, Gabon, with travel to project sites and potentially remote or challenging locations when required.
What You'll Do
Environmental & Social Assessments
Support the preparation and implementation of ESIAs and other environmental and social studies.
Conduct environmental and social assessments and contribute to identifying potential project impacts, risks and mitigation requirements.
Support the development of mitigation measures and Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs).
Fieldwork & Data Collection
Participate in environmental and social baseline studies, site inspections and field assessments.
Collect, review and analyse environmental and social data from field assignments.
Support stakeholder consultation and engagement activities and document key findings.
Monitoring & Compliance
Contribute to environmental and social monitoring activities.
Support compliance assessments and evaluate project performance against applicable environmental and social requirements.
Technical Reporting
Prepare clear and well-structured technical reports, field notes and other E&S deliverables.
Translate complex environmental and social information into accurate, practical and understandable technical documentation.
Work with project teams to ensure deliverables meet professional standards and agreed timelines.
Requirements
Core Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in:
- Environmental Science
- Environmental Management
- Environmental Engineering
- Natural Sciences
- Or a related environmental discipline
Professional Experience
3 to 6 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social consulting, mining, infrastructure, energy or related sectors.
Demonstrated experience contributing to ESIA projects is required.
Experience in the mining sector is highly desirable.
Technical Expertise
Strong environmental assessment and fieldwork capabilities.
Good technical report writing skills.
Knowledge of environmental and social standards and good international industry practice is an advantage.
Professional Strengths
Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Ability to move comfortably between field assignments, technical analysis and report preparation.
Language Requirements
French: Fluent
English: Working knowledge is an advantage
