Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important field of study and professional practice in Nigeria. Climate change, environmental management, sustainable development, responsible business, environmental and social safeguards, sustainable finance and sustainability reporting are creating new opportunities for people with the right combination of technical, analytical and policy skills.
The regulatory environment is also changing. Nigeria has adopted the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, through a phased implementation process. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission's September 2026 circular, Public Interest Entities, including public companies and significant public-interest capital-market operators, are required to prepare sustainability-related financial disclosures under IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 for accounting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2028. SMEs are scheduled for mandatory adoption from 2030.
This does not mean every Nigerian company will be required to publish an ESG report from 2028. The requirement depends on the type of entity and the applicable reporting framework. However, the transition is increasing the relevance of sustainability reporting, climate risk, environmental management, social safeguards, corporate governance and ESG expertise.
For secondary school students considering a sustainability-related career, university applicants choosing an undergraduate programme, or professionals considering a postgraduate transition into sustainability, there are several Nigerian universities and institutions worth exploring.
1. University of Ibadan
The University of Ibadan (UI) is one of the Nigerian universities with a dedicated academic centre focused specifically on sustainable development.
Through its Centre for Sustainable Development (CESDEV), the university coordinates multidisciplinary programmes covering sustainable development, development practice, indigenous knowledge, tourism, rural development, climate and society. The centre describes itself as a teaching, research and development unit.
Key sustainability programmes
Master's in Development Practice (MDP)
The MDP is the flagship programme of CESDEV's Development Practice Programme. It provides multidisciplinary training intended to help students understand development challenges and apply knowledge to real-world problems.
M.Sc. in Sustainable Development Practice
The academic Sustainable Development Practice programme runs for three semesters and provides broad-based multidisciplinary training in sustainable development. The programme is particularly relevant to people interested in development policy, research, community development and sustainability practice.
CESDEV also lists programmes including:
- Academic Master in Indigenous Knowledge and Development
- Professional Master in Indigenous Knowledge and Development
- Academic and Professional Master's in Tourism Development
- Master in Sustainable Integrated Rural Development
- Academic Master in Climate and Society
- Professional Diploma in Climate and Society
Good fit for: sustainable development, development policy, international development, NGOs, research, community development, climate and public-sector work.

2. University of Lagos
The University of Lagos offers several routes into sustainability through environmental management, environmental sustainability and policy, environmental and social standards, climate-related research and environmental safeguards.
One important postgraduate option is the Master of Environmental Management (MEM). The programme provides a direct postgraduate route for graduates seeking advanced training in environmental management.
UNILAG also offers an M.Sc. in Environmental Sustainability and Policy, making it particularly relevant for students looking for a postgraduate programme whose focus explicitly combines environmental sustainability with policy.
Another major sustainability-related initiative at UNILAG is the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Centre of Excellence (SPESSCE). The centre focuses on sustainable procurement and environmental and social standards, providing training relevant to environmental and social safeguards, impact assessment, compliance and development projects.
These pathways are useful for students and professionals who want to work at the intersection of environmental management, sustainability policy, infrastructure development and ESG-related safeguards.
Good fit for: environmental management, environmental sustainability, sustainability policy, ESIA, environmental and social safeguards, sustainable procurement, compliance and environmental consulting.

3. Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University
Not every sustainability career requires a traditional environmental science degree.
For professionals already working in business, finance, management, strategy, compliance, human resources or corporate communications, sustainability education can be approached from the business side.
The Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre offers executive and professional programmes covering corporate sustainability, ESG, sustainable business and related subjects. Its current programme portfolio includes the Effective Sustainability and ESG Management Programme and ESG Materiality Assessment and Sustainability Reporting.
The Effective Sustainability and ESG Management Programme is a certificate course designed for Africa-based private-sector executives. It covers corporate sustainability, CSR, environmental sustainability, social sustainability, strategy and governance, ESG risks, reporting, compliance, sustainability and finance, and ESG integration into business strategy.
Importantly, this is a professional certificate programme, not a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree. It is therefore better suited to professionals who already have a degree or career background and want to develop specialised sustainability and ESG expertise.
Good fit for: corporate sustainability, ESG management, sustainability strategy, governance, sustainability reporting, sustainable finance, corporate compliance and business leadership.

4. Federal University of Technology, Akure
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) provides another pathway into sustainability through environmental technology, environmental management and related technical disciplines.
FUTA's School of Environmental Technology has expanded its environmental focus, with the university stating that Senate approved the establishment of a Department of Environmental Management in 2024.
This technical orientation makes FUTA relevant to students interested in the applied side of sustainability rather than approaching the field exclusively through policy or business.
Potential areas of interest include environmental management, environmental technology, natural-resource management, environmental planning and related technical disciplines.
Good fit for: environmental management, environmental technology, environmental consulting, environmental planning and applied environmental research.

5. University of Nigeria, Nsukka
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) provides several sustainability-related postgraduate pathways.
Its 2026/2027 postgraduate admission information lists Environmental Management among the areas of specialisation under the Department of Geography. It also lists programmes through the NNPC/SPDC Joint Venture Centre of Excellence in Environmental Management and Green Energy (CEMAGE), including PGD, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Environmental Management and Control, Green Energy, Disaster Risk Management and Chemical Security Management.
The university's Geography programme also covers areas such as environmental management, GIS, climatology, hydrology, remote sensing and urban and rural geography.
This gives UNN a particularly broad sustainability profile because students can approach environmental challenges through geography, environmental management, energy, disaster risk and spatial analysis.
Good fit for: environmental management, green energy, climate-related research, GIS, disaster risk management, environmental planning and sustainability research.

6. Ahmadu Bello University
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, also offers environmental and sustainability-related postgraduate pathways.
Its postgraduate programme information includes a Master's in Environmental Chemistry, providing an option for students interested in the scientific side of environmental problems. ABU's programme listings also include areas such as Environmental Engineering and Management, Environmental Geology, Environmental Toxicology, Geomatics and Climate Change and Economic Policy.
These programmes can be particularly relevant to students interested in environmental pollution, environmental monitoring, environmental technology, natural resources and scientific research.
Good fit for: environmental chemistry, pollution management, environmental toxicology, environmental engineering, geomatics and environmental research.

Other Nigerian Universities to Explore
The universities above are not the only institutions where students can build a sustainability career.
A sustainability pathway can also come through degrees in environmental science, environmental management, geography, ecology, agricultural science, engineering, economics, development studies, energy, public policy, law and business.
For example, the University of Nigeria's current postgraduate information includes Environmental Management, Environmental Economics, Environmental Planning and Management, GIS, climate-related disciplines and green-energy programmes.
The important point is that the absence of the word "sustainability" from a degree title does not automatically make the programme irrelevant to sustainability.
Sustainability Is Bigger Than a Degree Called "Sustainability"
One of the biggest mistakes prospective students can make is assuming that they need a degree with the word "sustainability" in its title.
Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field.
An environmental scientist can work in sustainability. An engineer can work in renewable energy or resource efficiency. An economist can work in climate finance. An accountant can specialise in sustainability reporting. A lawyer can work in environmental regulation and ESG compliance. A geographer can work in GIS, climate adaptation or environmental planning. A business graduate can move into ESG strategy and corporate sustainability.
The degree is therefore only one part of the equation.
Your technical skills, research experience, professional certifications, industry knowledge, data skills and ability to understand sustainability frameworks can all influence the direction of your career.
Which Sustainability Pathway Should You Choose?
Sustainable development and policy
If your interest is sustainable development, development policy, international development, community development or research, the University of Ibadan's CESDEV programmes are worth considering. The Development Practice Programme specifically offers both the Master's in Development Practice and M.Sc. in Sustainable Development Practice.
Environmental management
If you want to work directly with environmental systems, pollution, environmental assessment, environmental regulation or environmental planning, environmental management and environmental science programmes provide a more technical foundation.
UNILAG, FUTA and UNN offer different pathways into this area.
ESG and corporate sustainability
If your target is corporate ESG, sustainability strategy, governance, reporting or sustainable finance, you do not necessarily need to return to university for another science degree.
Professional education such as the Lagos Business School Effective Sustainability and ESG Management Programme can provide specialised training for professionals working in business and management.
Environmental and social safeguards
If you are interested in infrastructure projects, development finance, ESIA, stakeholder engagement, social safeguards or environmental compliance, programmes and training focused on environmental and social standards can be particularly relevant.
UNILAG's SPESSCE is an institution to investigate in this area.
Technical sustainability
For careers involving environmental technology, environmental engineering, energy, natural resources, GIS, pollution control or environmental monitoring, a technical university programme may provide the strongest foundation.
FUTA, UNN and ABU provide examples of institutions where students can explore these technical pathways.
What About Miva Open University?
Miva Open University appeared in the earlier version of this article as an institution offering a Master's in International and Sustainable Development.
However, the programme could not be sufficiently verified through the university's current official programme information. It is therefore better not to present the M.Sc. in International and Sustainable Development as a confirmed current programme until Miva publishes official information confirming it.
This is an important distinction when publishing an education guide. University programmes change, and readers should not be directed toward a programme based solely on old listings, third-party websites or social-media posts.
What About Pan-Atlantic University?
Pan-Atlantic University is relevant to sustainability education primarily through Lagos Business School and its Sustainability Centre.
Rather than describing its sustainability offerings as a conventional sustainability degree, it is more accurate to present LBS as a route for executive and professional sustainability education.
The current LBS Sustainability Centre portfolio includes the Effective Sustainability and ESG Management Programme and ESG Materiality Assessment and Sustainability Reporting, among other sustainability-related offerings.
This makes the institution particularly relevant to professionals who want to add ESG and sustainability capabilities to an existing business or management career.
Final Thoughts
There is no single academic route into sustainability.
The right programme depends on the type of sustainability professional you want to become.
If your interest is sustainable development and development policy, multidisciplinary programmes such as those offered by the University of Ibadan's CESDEV may be relevant.
If you want environmental management, environmental science, environmental management and related technical programmes provide a more direct route.
If you want corporate ESG and sustainability, business-focused professional education can complement an existing degree and work experience.
If you want environmental and social safeguards, specialised training in environmental and social standards, impact assessment and development-project safeguards can be useful.
And if your interest is technical sustainability, areas such as environmental technology, engineering, green energy, GIS, climate science and natural-resource management can provide a stronger technical foundation.
Nigeria's move toward mandatory sustainability disclosures also means that sustainability is becoming increasingly connected to corporate reporting, finance, governance and risk management. The 2028 reporting milestone is therefore significant, but it is only one part of a much broader sustainability landscape.
Before applying to any programme, prospective students should check the university's latest admission notice, programme page, entry requirements, accreditation status, tuition fees and delivery format. Programmes can change, and a course listed online several years ago may no longer be offered in the same form.
