About Pacific Gas and Electric Company

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is an energy utility serving customers across Northern and Central California. Its Energy Policy & Procurement function manages electricity and natural gas procurement from wholesale markets while supporting system reliability, long-term planning, risk management, regulatory compliance, and energy policy.

PG&E is also working toward its goal of achieving 100% greenhouse gas-free energy by 2045, making quantitative forecasting and energy portfolio analysis increasingly important to its long-term strategy.

The Opportunity

PG&E is seeking a Quantitative Analyst to join its Portfolio Forecasting team within the Energy Policy Analysis and Design department.

The successful candidate will help develop forecasts and analytical models covering generation, energy compliance, emissions, reliability, and long-term energy procurement.

This role sits at the intersection of energy markets, quantitative analysis, climate policy, utility planning, and procurement strategy.

You will work with commercial and strategy teams to translate complex energy data and uncertainty into insights that support major business and policy decisions.

What You'll Do

Energy Forecasting & Modeling

Develop generation and compliance forecasts related to PG&E's clean energy, emissions, and reliability positions.

Build and manage simulation models that account for uncertainties affecting PG&E's electric generation portfolio.

Research market conditions, policies, assumptions, and scenarios to improve forecasting accuracy.

Integrate forecasts into long-term planning, policy development, and strategic decision-making.

Market Intelligence

Assess electricity supply-side and demand-side energy resources.

Monitor energy markets, technologies, policies, and other factors that could affect PG&E's portfolio.

Identify critical uncertainties and incorporate them into forecasting scenarios.

Strategic Analysis

Produce quantitative analysis supporting resource planning, infrastructure decisions, business strategy, and public policy positions.

Translate complex analytical findings into clear insights for technical, commercial, and management audiences.

Develop effective data visualizations and presentation materials.

Continuous Improvement

Identify opportunities to improve forecasting processes, analytical models, data inputs, platforms, and delivery systems.

Document forecasting methodologies, best practices, use cases, analytical techniques, and process improvements.

Support roadmaps designed to strengthen PG&E's forecasting capabilities.

Policy & Regulatory Support

Assist with analytical work, testimony, work papers, and exhibits supporting energy policy positions.

Review and analyze testimony, comments, and other regulatory materials from interveners.

Provide quantitative evidence to support PG&E's regulatory and policy objectives.

Core Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Econometrics, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Statistics, Business, or an equivalent discipline.
  • At least 2 years of job-related experience, or 1 year of job-related experience with a master's degree.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

PG&E is particularly interested in candidates with experience in:

  • Energy-related quantitative analysis.
  • Probabilistic dispatch modeling.
  • Production simulation modeling.
  • Technology market or program assessments.
  • Energy portfolio forecasting.
  • Project, process, or product management.
  • Electric or natural gas utilities.
  • Independent power producers.
  • Wholesale energy markets.
  • Regulatory agencies or consulting organizations.
  • California's investor-owned utility regulatory environment.
  • Advanced Excel modeling.
  • Power BI.
  • SQL, R, SAS, Stata, MATLAB, or similar analytical/statistical tools.
  • Database management techniques.
  • Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Why This Role Matters

Energy utilities are increasingly required to make decisions under conditions of uncertainty.

Electricity demand, renewable generation, energy prices, emissions requirements, storage deployment, grid reliability, and regulatory policy are all evolving simultaneously.

This role helps PG&E quantify those uncertainties and convert them into actionable decisions.

The analyst will contribute to decisions surrounding long-term energy procurement, clean energy deployment, generation planning, infrastructure investment, regulatory policy, and PG&E's pathway toward 100% greenhouse gas-free energy by 2045.
