The company combines energy services, technology, customer solutions, and innovative business models to help customers power, protect, and intelligently manage their homes and businesses.

NRG promotes an inclusive workplace focused on collaboration, professional development, and long-term business performance.

The Opportunity

NRG is seeking a Manager, Energy Markets & Strategic Analysis to join its Growth & Partnerships organization in Houston, Texas.

This role is designed for an intellectually curious and analytically rigorous energy professional who can operate at the intersection of power markets, customer energy solutions, regulation, and corporate growth.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise and business judgment to complex strategic opportunities involving data centers, distributed energy resources, virtual power plants, load management, generation development, and utility partnerships.

This is a highly analytical role requiring the ability to interpret energy-market rules, utility tariffs, regulatory decisions, financial models, and commercial opportunities, then translate those details into clear strategic recommendations.

What You'll Do

Energy Market & Regulatory Analysis

Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of energy market opportunities, regulatory developments, customer segments, and emerging energy business models.

Review and interpret utility tariffs, regulatory orders, RTO/ISO market rules, interconnection requirements, and procurement mechanisms.

Analyze market structures and regulatory developments to identify opportunities, constraints, risks, and potential commercial implications.

Financial & Economic Modeling

Build, audit, and improve complex financial, operational, and economic models.

Evaluate business opportunities, investments, partnerships, and new ventures using rigorous quantitative analysis.

Challenge assumptions, identify errors, and improve the analytical quality of detailed models.

Strategic Growth

Support high-priority growth opportunities across NRG's portfolio, including:

  • Data centers
  • Distributed energy resources
  • Virtual power plants
  • Load management solutions
  • Generation development
  • Utility partnerships

Identify key assumptions, risks, constraints, and value drivers across potential investments, partnerships, and new business opportunities.

Conduct competitive assessments, market intelligence, and benchmarking to support strategic decision-making.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work with commercial, regulatory, finance, operations, development, and other internal teams to evaluate and advance strategic opportunities.

Translate complex technical information into clear business implications, risks, decision points, and recommended actions.

Serve as a trusted thought partner to internal stakeholders and help bridge organizational boundaries.

Executive Communication

Develop executive-ready presentations, business cases, and decision-support materials for senior leadership.

Communicate complex energy-market, regulatory, commercial, and financial concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

Core Qualifications

  • 5 to 10+ years of experience in energy markets, utilities, retail energy, power development, consulting, trading, regulatory affairs, energy analytics, project finance, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Energy Systems, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
  • Deep knowledge of the North American energy industry.
  • Strong understanding of wholesale power markets, utility business models, and customer energy solutions.

Technical Expertise

  • Experience working with or analyzing ISOs/RTOs such as ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, and NYISO.
  • Familiarity with utility tariffs and regulatory frameworks.
  • Understanding of interconnection processes and transmission planning.
  • Knowledge of capacity markets, demand response, DERs, virtual power plants, and power generation economics.
  • Advanced Excel modeling capabilities.
  • Ability to review, audit, and improve complex financial, operational, and market models.

Professional Strengths

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
  • Ability to independently develop insights and test assumptions.
  • Strong business judgment.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Ability to connect technical details to practical business outcomes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across diverse teams and functions.

Mindset Fit

NRG is looking for someone who is comfortable operating in complex and ambiguous environments.

The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, challenges conventional thinking, looks beyond obvious solutions, and can identify pragmatic ways to move strategic opportunities forward.

Preferred Qualifications

An MBA, master's degree, or other advanced degree is preferred but not required.

Experience with wholesale electricity market structures, utility partnerships, energy development, customer energy solutions, or emerging energy business models will be particularly valuable.

Success in This Role

Success will involve the ability to:

  • Quickly understand complex energy-market, tariff, regulatory, and commercial issues.
  • Produce high-quality analytical work with limited supervision.
  • Identify errors, assumptions, risks, and value drivers in complex models.
  • Influence decisions through facts, relationships, credibility, and clear communication.
  • Translate complicated industry dynamics into actionable business recommendations.
  • Help NRG identify, evaluate, and execute growth opportunities that generate long-term enterprise value.

Why This Role Matters

The energy sector is undergoing a structural transformation driven by rising electricity demand, data centers, distributed energy resources, grid constraints, evolving wholesale markets, and changing customer expectations.

This role sits close to those developments.

By combining market intelligence, regulatory analysis, financial modeling, and strategic planning, the Manager will help NRG determine where emerging opportunities make commercial sense and how the company can turn them into scalable sources of growth.
