The Opportunity

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Carbon Strategy and Markets Lead for the Latin America Region (LAR) to provide strategic leadership on carbon markets and carbon finance initiatives across the region.

The successful candidate will help expand high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions by translating conservation projects into scalable carbon finance opportunities that generate measurable climate, biodiversity, and community benefits.

The role involves coordinating carbon market strategies across multiple countries, supporting investment opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring alignment with TNC's global climate objectives.

What You'll Do

Carbon Strategy Leadership

  • Develop long-term regional carbon market and carbon finance strategies.
  • Align regional carbon initiatives with TNC's global climate and conservation goals.
  • Identify and prioritize high-impact carbon finance opportunities across Latin America.
  • Support the development of scalable Natural Climate Solutions.

Carbon Markets and Technical Advisory

  • Provide guidance on emerging carbon market mechanisms.
  • Support compliance and voluntary carbon market initiatives.
  • Advise on Article 6 developments, jurisdictional approaches, and carbon market integration.
  • Ensure projects align with scientific standards, environmental safeguards, and equitable benefit-sharing principles.

Partnership Development

  • Build relationships with governments, investors, NGOs, and private sector partners.
  • Negotiate partnership agreements and memorandums of understanding.
  • Represent TNC in regional and international carbon market discussions.
  • Strengthen long-term partnerships that support conservation finance.

Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building

  • Develop and share carbon market frameworks, tools, and best practices.
  • Increase carbon market knowledge across TNC's regional teams.
  • Coordinate with scientists, policy specialists, and conservation teams.
  • Support internal learning across multiple business units.

Fundraising and External Engagement

  • Support fundraising initiatives.
  • Assist with strategic communications.
  • Engage with donors and development partners.
  • Promote TNC's conservation finance initiatives throughout the region.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, resource management, or a related field.
  • Significant experience in carbon finance or carbon project development.
  • Deep knowledge of carbon markets and carbon finance mechanisms in Latin America.
  • Experience leading complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and communication abilities.
  • Experience working across different cultures and institutional environments.
  • Fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical Expertise

  • Experience designing or advising on Natural Climate Solutions projects.
  • Strong understanding of carbon science.
  • Experience with carbon standards and verification systems.
  • Knowledge of conservation finance.
  • Financial modeling and business planning experience.
  • Deal structuring and negotiation expertise.

Professional Experience

  • Experience working with governments, NGOs, investors, and technical institutions.
  • Knowledge of environmental politics and international affairs.
  • Experience developing major conservation strategies.
  • Ability to work independently in complex environments.

Language Skills

  • Spanish proficiency preferred.
  • Portuguese proficiency preferred.
