Senior Manager, ESG (ESMS & ESAP Lead) – Anthem Renewable Energy

Location: South Africa (implied from Anthem regional operations)
Work Mode: Hybrid / Project-based (not explicitly stated, but matrix + site integration role)
Sector: Renewable Energy, Infrastructure, Utilities

Role Overview

Anthem is strengthening its ESG function to embed environmental and social governance across its renewable energy portfolio. This role sits close to the Head of ESG and acts as the operational engine for ESMS design, ESAP delivery, and ESG integration across development, construction, and operations.

This is a compliance role on paper, but strategically it behaves like an ESG systems architect position. You are not just tracking risk. You are building the system that defines how risk is governed, measured, and monetised into investment decisions.

Core Responsibilities

1. ESMS Design and Governance

  • Support design and implementation of Anthem’s Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS)
  • Develop ESG policies, procedures, and tools across asset lifecycle stages
  • Ensure alignment with IFC Performance Standards and ESG frameworks
  • Integrate ESMS into broader Integrated Management Systems

2. ESAP Management and Compliance Tracking

  • Manage central Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) register
  • Define indicators, assign ownership, and track execution status
  • Prepare executive-level compliance and progress reports
  • Coordinate compliance checks across legal, labour, and permitting frameworks

3. ESG Data, Monitoring, and Reporting

  • Collect and consolidate ESG data across HSE, operations, finance, and social teams
  • Build dashboards and reporting systems for audit-ready ESG disclosure
  • Support quarterly and annual ESG reporting cycles
  • Improve data integrity and governance systems

4. ESG Integration into Investment Decisions

  • Embed ESG requirements into screening, due diligence, and investment committee processes
  • Support Development and O&M teams in maintaining minimum ESG thresholds
  • Prepare ESG inputs for investment decision papers

5. Climate, Biodiversity, and Circular Economy Innovation

  • Conduct climate and biodiversity risk assessments
  • Identify and scale circular economy and nature-positive opportunities
  • Design pilots linking biodiversity, restoration, and community livelihoods
  • Translate environmental findings into actionable project design requirements

6. Stakeholder, Social Risk, and Governance Support

  • Support stakeholder mapping for high-risk projects
  • Ensure social commitments are tracked through ESAP frameworks
  • Collaborate with Social Performance teams on mitigation planning

7. Training and ESG Culture Building

  • Support ESG committee reporting and governance packs
  • Develop ESG and ESMS training materials for internal teams
  • Strengthen ESG awareness across project lifecycle stakeholders

Candidate Profile

  • Strong ESG / Environmental & Social governance foundation
  • Deep knowledge of IFC Performance Standards (PS1–PS6 essential focus areas)
  • Experience designing or operating ESMS frameworks in infrastructure or energy sectors
  • Hands-on ESAP management and compliance tracking experience
  • Strong ESG data systems, reporting, and dashboard capability
  • Understanding of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and circular economy models
  • Experience integrating ESG into investment or project finance decision-making
  • Strong cross-functional stakeholder management across technical and financial teams
  • Degree in environmental science, engineering, social science, sustainability, or related field

What This Role Really Is

This is not just ESG oversight. It is:

  • A control tower for ESG risk in renewable infrastructure
  • A bridge between compliance frameworks and investment logic
  • A systems design role for how ESG actually gets executed on the ground
  • A mix of regulator-facing discipline and innovation pipeline building

In plain terms, you are building the ESG operating system while also stress-testing it under real project pressure.
