CA Global Finance – Associate, Environmental & Social Risk Management Lagos, Nigeria

Location: Lagos, Nigeria (Relocation required)
Work Mode: On-site

Role Overview

This role sits inside a financial institution that is actively strengthening its Environmental & Social Risk Management (ESRM) framework across its lending and investment portfolio. The Associate will act as a critical control point between capital deployment and sustainability risk governance.

In practical terms, this is not a “reporting-only” ESG job. It is a deal-influencing risk role. You are embedded in investment decisions, ensuring that environmental and social risks are identified early, measured properly, and managed throughout the life of the asset.

The institution operates across infrastructure and development finance in Africa, meaning your work directly touches high-impact sectors such as energy, transport, and industrial projects. Every decision has real-world consequences for communities, ecosystems, and long-term financial performance.

What You Will Actually Do

Your daily function is a blend of ESG technical analysis, credit risk thinking, and client engagement.

You will:

  • Conduct environmental and social due diligence on debt and equity investment proposals
  • Identify ESG risks early in project lifecycles and propose mitigation measures
  • Ensure loan agreements include environmental covenants, warranties, and compliance clauses
  • Work with clients to implement Environmental & Social Action Plans aligned with IFC Performance Standards
  • Integrate ESG risk considerations into enterprise-wide risk management systems
  • Monitor portfolio companies for ongoing compliance and emerging risks
  • Support identification of green and climate-aligned investments eligible for concessional or blended finance
  • Deliver internal ESG risk training for business teams and credit originators
  • Prepare portfolio-level risk reports for senior leadership and the Chief Risk Officer
  • Engage external consultants, co-lenders, and development finance stakeholders on technical assessments

This is essentially where finance meets environmental governance, with real accountability.

Core Technical Frameworks You Must Know

You will be expected to work fluently with:

  • IFC Performance Standards
  • Equator Principles
  • World Bank Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines
  • African Development Bank Safeguard Systems
  • ILO Core Labour Standards (advantageous)

If these frameworks are unfamiliar, this role is not entry-level ESG theory work. It is applied institutional risk management.

Who This Role Is For

This is suited for professionals with 7–10 years of experience in environmental management, ESG risk, or sustainability within:

  • Banks or financial institutions
  • Infrastructure or industrial sectors
  • Development finance institutions
  • Heavy industry, oil & gas, or mining ESG compliance

Strong advantage if you understand how credit decisions intersect with environmental liability.

You also need:

  • Strong analytical and structured thinking ability
  • Confidence engaging senior stakeholders and investment teams
  • Experience working in emerging markets, especially Africa
  • Ability to translate technical environmental issues into financial risk language

Languages and Mobility

  • English required
  • French is mandatory
  • Willingness to travel across Africa is expected

This is a regional ESG risk function, not a desk-only reporting job.

Strategic Insight (Important)

This role is less “ESG storytelling” and more ESG enforcement inside capital allocation. If sustainability reporting is the “narrative layer,” this is the “risk gatekeeping layer.”

In plain terms: you don’t just describe impact. You decide whether impact risks are acceptable before money moves.
